It’s not an unfamiliar word for most of us. Maybe you have seen it on t-shirts, on a music label, or even heard the word in a church. But what is the gospel? The word itself means “good news,” but what is this news, and what is so good about it, anyway?
It all begins with God, Who has always been. In the beginning, God spoke and creation came into existence. Of all the beauty he created, the masterpiece was a man and woman. He designed them to worship Him and enjoy relationship with Him. By God’s design, all of creation was in harmony – it was exactly the way it was supposed to be, with complete love and acceptance between God and man.
What went wrong? The first humans broke God’s law and tried to invent their own morality. The consequences of their actions were devastating. We have all seen the war, poverty, disease, greed, and scandal that plague our world today. Those are all a result of sin. Sin doesn’t just work outside of us, but inside of us. Just think of the grudges we have held, the lies we have told, and the thoughts we would never dare say aloud. An honest look into own hearts reveals the truth: we are all guilty. This guilt means eternity without God.
What could be done? The Bible tells us that God became human in the person of Jesus 2000 years ago. Jesus had a miraculous birth. He lived a perfect life without sin. And He died on a cross. In an incredible display of mercy and grace, Jesus’ life and death became a substitute for all sinners. Then on the third day, Jesus emerged from His tomb, fulfilling His mission to defeat sin by rising from the dead.
But it doesn’t end there. For those who trust in Jesus, God has promised to renew the earth. The new earth will be free of sin – a perfect place of friendship with God and others. No devastation, no sin, no pain, no broken hearts, and no death. God’s original purpose will flourish, as those He has rescued will enjoy eternity with Him.
So what must we do? God calls us to repent and believe this good news. Repentance takes place when you realize your sinfulness and helplessness before God. It is a change of mind – to see God for who He really is, and sin for what it really is. Faith is trusting in Jesus Christ alone to save you. Instead of believing you can rescue yourself from the consequences of sin, you trust the One Who died for your sins to fully save you and make you right with God.
